CAN and US Trade Wars – reality bites……..Canada!

Canadians are furious because the U.S. is using protectionist measures to protect American industries. Yet Canada does exactly the same thing. Our supply-management system puts extraordinarily high tariffs on certain American dairy, poultry and egg products once imports exceed established quotas. Some of those tariffs are well over 200%. We can’t pretend Canada is some completely open free-trading country while accusing the Americans of protectionism.  Canada has also imposed measures specifically restricting U.S. automobiles. Canada imposed 25% tariffs on certain U.S. vehicles and established limits on duty-free access for qualifying American vehicles. Canada has even reduced those allowances for companies that moved manufacturing from Canada back to the United States.

But? Orange Man Bad! Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) is now an official mental illness affecting Canadian progressives.

Never mind Jack Daniels, California wine! Did you know you can buy Canadian wine cheaper in the US than in Canada? But hey, buy Canadian eh.

The U.S. now argues that Canada is treating American automotive products worse than products from some other countries. Canada also gives certain European dairy products more favourable access than comparable American products. Under Canada’s European trade agreement, retailers can access certain cheese import quotas that they cannot access under the equivalent CUSMA quota for American cheese.  The U.S. argues, with some justification, that this puts American dairy producers at a disadvantage compared with European producers. Many provinces pulled American liquor off their shelves as retaliation against the United States. Whatever you think about the symbolism of doing that, it created another barrier against American products while the federal government was simultaneously trying to negotiate a trade agreement with the Americans. The U.S. has specifically identified these restrictions as one of its trade complaints against Canada.

Softwood lumber. This is a decades-old dispute, long before Donald Trump came along. The Americans have argued for decades that Canada’s Crown-land stumpage system effectively subsidizes Canadian lumber producers, allowing them to sell lumber into the U.S. at unfairly low prices and undercut American producers. Canada disputes that argument, but pretending this is something Donald Trump suddenly invented is simply false.

Buy Canadian procurement policies. Canada and several provinces have introduced measures restricting or excluding American companies from certain government procurement opportunities. To be fair, the United States also has Buy American and Buy America restrictions. So it goes both ways. Probably illegal under WTO regulations.

Canadians are not saints in all of this – as the 4 faced Carney Liberals would have you believe they are. The big bad bully Anericans. Carney wants to take Canada to the European realm – a huge mistake that will cost Canadians thousands of jobs. But hey we’re Canadians and we’re better than everyone on the planet.

Inter-provincial trade barriers? Still in force across Canada.

So Doug Ford is going to cut off the energy to the United States?  This is an idiotic statement at anytime, but to say it while you’re losing a battle in U.S. courts to keep Enbridge Line 5 open is beyond comprehension.  The truth is that without oil pipelines from America to Quebec and Ontario those 2 provinces would have frozen decades ago.  But of course the Liberals have their climate change victory over the Canadian pipeline project that tried to supply them with oil for Western Canada, that should keep them warm at night.

It’s time for Doug Ford to shut up; his zingers for sound bites are not helping.  Same for BC’s Eby. Canada needs a trade deal with the U.S.  Our economy is dependent upon it, always has been. There are 119 crossings along the 5,525 mile border between Canada and the United States, 48 of those crossing are in the 4 Western Provinces. There is only 1 highway connecting Western Canada to Eastern Canada. That speaks volumes as to how our industries and trade work in Canada.  To suggest we can replace U.S. trade – over 70% of our exports – by doubling our trade with other countries over the next decade is embecilic. It’s time to make a deal with the U.S.
